Well, you need to figure out if the engine is quitting due to a loss of spark or some sort of fuel system/carb issue. This engine has the old style metal fuel tank which is prone to rust/fouling, drain the fuel/oil out and have a look inside. You are in trouble if the tank is rusted/fouled inside. The fuel valve/petcock has a little screen filter in it as well, it just threads up into the tank. Is the fuel cap vent/screw working properly? Fuel won’t flow very long if the vent is closed/plugged up. If the tank is clean, fill it with fresh fuel/oil mix and close the petcock/fuel line valve. Now remove the fuel line from the carb and stick it inside a suitable glass jar. Now open the tank vent and fuel valve/petcock, make sure fuel flows from the line at a decent rate for a few minutes.
I suppose I should have led with the basics, be sure you are using fresh fuel/oil mixted at a least 50:1. Old fuel mix, or water would surely cause the issues you report. Needless to say, this is a two stroke, so running it with no/insufficient oil mix will cause the engine to seize and stall. Is the water pump working OK? There should be a fine spray of mist coming from those four relief holes in the middle of the exhaust tube. The engine will seize and stall if it is running too hot.
One more little test… Try partially closing the choke when the engine falters/wants to stall. Fuel system issues are likely if the engine RPM picks up momentarily with the choke almost closed. Have you checked the gear lube? The engine will bind/bog/seize if there is no lube in the gearcase and the parts are binding up due to lack of lube. Just trying to think of simple things to check before attacking the ignition system needlessly. Like others have said, don’t attempt to remove that flywheel with a three jaw puller. Have you tried a new Champion J6C spark plug?
Any possibility of posting a video of the engine misbehaving??
By the way, this engine a 1968-70 1.5hp OMC/Evinrude/Johnson. The parts books/service manual for any of these model years will work fine for your engine. Post the model number if you want the exact year.
