Make sure to get the correct spring as they vary in length.

July 24, 2016 at 12:43 pm #40808The thing to remember here is that flywheel size/diameter changed in 1958 for the 10hps. So, the location of the engagement pawl on the recoil changed as well. So, if the flywheel/recoil are mismatched, you will have an issue….The starter on the right, with the pawl closer to the hub, looks to be for the smaller diameter flywheels on the 1958 and up models. The starter on the left, with the pawl farther out from the hub, looks to be for the larger flywheels on pre 58 10hps.

I assume if you swap both the flywheel and starter together everything should work out, or are there other factors involved ?

Well, this is not something I figured out, was pointed out here earlier by Frank I believe. But, I’m thinking that you could use the smaller diameter flywheel on the older motors (56-57 models) with the newer recoil. And, I’m sure you could go the other way as well, put the larger diameter flywheel and older starter (56-57 models) on the newer engines (58-63). To clarify, when I say "starter", the only part that is different is the recoil pulley, I’m pretty sure the housings are the same on both styles of starter.
