As I was looking for Internet photos of Johnson HD-15’s to
see what the missing cover emblem and primer knob looks
like for my outboard, I found some good photos of an HD-10
on Ebay. The outboard looks just like my HD-15, so
I presumed the HD-10 was just a prior year model.
When I looked up the model list though on Marine Engine,
things get confusing! It appears that they made both the HD-10
and HD-15 in 1940, as well as an HA-15, which looks
      totally different.
Any idea why Johnson had such a variety of 2.5 hp motors
      for 1940?

      HA-39 2.5 1939
      HA-10 2.5 1940
      HA-15 2.5 1940
      HD-10 2.5 1940
      HD-15 2.5 1940

Upon purchase, my HD-15 was missing the rewind.
My uncle found a empty rewind housing for it in his
junk pile. Any idea if the guts would fit from
      another, more available model?

Of the photos, only the HD-15 is mine.
      Thanks!

I see your missing the usually missing (3) piano springs for your unit. I got a complete rewind unit and cover that bolts on from our favorite used "old engine collector" Doug Penn. Someone earlier said he got married and retired, but I see he is back up on his home page.

Oltimer, I presume by piano springs, your talking about
the three rewind pawl springs. If so, I got some practice
making those on the three HD-25’s I went through!
I found a loose HD-25 rewind today. It’s guts are
definitely too big for the HD-15 housing.
If I get the old girl running, I’ll find parts.
If it doesn’t, I’ll wrap a rope around the rewind,
thread the end out the housing, and attach pull
handle…… good for one pull 🙂
Garry, I’m glad your list confirms that Johnson
made too many 2.5 hp engines in 1940!

I think it is called a Simplex Starter Buccaneer. Known for not standing up, and guy’s had better results over the long term by removing it.
