Hi folks , I recently purchased this motor (Johnson 5.5 HP seahorse 1958 cd 15) , the guy told me it is in excellent condition, after doing some research I find its has the original two line cruise a day tank and lines , I have no idea of the gas mix to even test it, looking for any information I can get basically , also any idea of the value of this in perfect running condition , I have photos available if that would help , thanks to all in advance, Jonathan>

April 19, 2022 at 5:33 pm #258582Here’s the parts manual for you to download. And as mentioned, because of their internal design, these motors require a 16: fuel mix to survive. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

April 20, 2022 at 6:57 am #258615thank you everyone, wow $100.00 what a deal. so even with todays oils it still needs to run at 16:1 eh, should I be worried about the tank blowing up, that’s really my biggest fear after.
April 20, 2022 at 8:35 am #258616old wives tale mostly tank lovers swear by them if they are sound.
if rusted or leaky some have used tank liner (liquid) stuff to reseal them . the stuff is also used on motor cycle tanks.
me personnaly…. I have converted most of mine (except the green one) for resale mostly…. just to recoup my engine + parts costs for a hobby that keeps me busy in the winter time.
on a dozen or more jw cd qd fd & a few mercs, of 15 hp or less I pay and have always paid less then 100$ cdn….but prices are getting crazy

April 20, 2022 at 11:26 am #258629There is a really good book “Cheap Outboards” by Max Wawrzyniak III. It is about 1950s Johnson/Evinrude motors. If you have little experience with outboards it will be enjoyable and informative. Ten years after I bought it I still refer to my copy.

April 20, 2022 at 8:43 pm #258657There is no need to worry about the two line pressure tank, it will not blow up. There is a pressure relief valve inside just in case it does develop too much pressure. Just make sure it is clean inside, the tank isn’t much good if the inside is rusted/fouled. There is no reason to “convert” this engine to use a fuel pump, this conversion is not very easy on these engines because they have no intake bypass covers. These are amazing engines, and don’t smoke much, even at the necessary fuel/oil mix of 16:1. Don’t listen to anyone who recommends using less oil, regardless of “today’s improved oils”. These engines have plain connecting rod bearings that are prone to failure if less oil is used.
