Thank you for the information on the carburetor. I finally got the A 25 running today. It turned out that one of the new spark plugs I had ordered was no good. It would not fire under compression. It took me awhile to figure this one out, as my AOMC tester showed good spark, and the plug fired fine out of the combustion chamber. Anyway, I put an old plug in and the motor fired right up and ran great. Now I need to find a tiller handle grip. Thanks Jonathan

November 3, 2023 at 1:42 pm #282253I now have my A25 running. I notice that it is throwing out a lot of john Deere corn head grease from the lower unit, appears to be coming out around the prop shaft. There is no appreciable play/wear in the shaft when I grasp the shaft and move it up and down, but I am sure there is wear on the shaft and the bushing in the housing cover. Is this normal for gear lube to come out in this location? Have I overfilled the gear case? I guess if lube is coming out, water is not going in? Any advice appreciated. thanks Jonathan
November 3, 2023 at 5:08 pm #282260All my A models leak grease to some extent. As for overfilling,Johnson says A model gearcase capacity is 3 oz.They also warn against overfilling because it can interfere with water pump operation.Every time I run one of mine I drain off any water that may have entered and add a little grease.
November 3, 2023 at 9:15 pm #282275So I was wondering how to drain any accumulated water from the gear case. The drain/fill plug seems to be located above the lowest point in the gear case so when I remove this nothing comes out. Do you have to remove the gear case cover after each run to drain any water that accumulates? Thanks Jonathan
November 4, 2023 at 9:43 am #282279I just take out top gear case head screw (it’s hole goes into gearcase so it acts as vent) and fill screw and tilt motor so water can drain.Once a year I take gear case head off and check grease amount and for any remaining water.

On many of my pre. WW-II, no seal, gear cases, I’ll put enough O
rings on the prop shaft that the prop will hold them against the prop
shaft bushing. Once the prop touches the O ring (rings) I’ll tighten
the prop nut 1 face or just far enough so I can get the shear pin in.
The grease lubricates them so they last longer than you’d think.
How effective is this? I like to think it is but its really hard to tell
how much as your still passing grease through the drive shaft bushing.
I’ll run a motor for week at a time and try to judge, by tanks of gas
used, when to pull the motor, drain the water, and add more grease.
When I’m done using the motor I remove the remaining grease.
If you refill the gear case it will drip. I attach a note that there is no
grease in the gear case.
Tubs.
