Hello.  New here.  I’ve recently acquired a Johnson HD 15 and I’m wondering if the motor is rebuildable.  The motor spins and does not appear to be missing anything.  I have the motor, tool bag, owner’s manual, and spare prop.   Is there a service manual?

        Hi Ken,

Everyone here calls this service manual ‘The Bible’. Unfortunately it’s not a free download, but for the $19.98 they ask it’s well worth it.

In my experience it’s likely someone will offer to get you a copy, so maybe hold tight for a day or two.

        Good luck and welcome.

        Best Regards

it was on  Garry Spencer’s  list of docs which is no longer available for free download  for members but  what is 20$ these days 🙂

the file is quite large  the only way would be for a member with a file transfer  like dropbox to provide a link .

see ex: pages   sorry magneto file is  over 2 meg    this site will not handle >2 meg

before spending $$$ check  compression   head gasket  are cheap but a full rebuild may be $$$$  checkGC  for water  (may need  a reseal) etc….    great hobby  !

Ken if you want to PM me your e-mail address I can send you the “Red Book” that these guys are talking about.  It would be sent through a free file transfer service called WETRANSFER.

                Thanks for all the replies.

I am patient.  I would like to set this unit next to my 25 Evinrude for trolling.

I will check compression.  What is a good pressure?

GC will need a seal.  No water just old grease.  Motor was stored indoors and hasn’t been on the water for at least 5 decades.  I know the original owner.  Husband has been gone and wife kept it on a motor cart.  It could really use a paint job.

I have discovered the Pochefamily site. Thanks

                1.  I don’t know how to PM.
                2.  As a member, is there a way to search the forums without tabbing through the pages?

                Thanks Ken

some engine run fine at 65-7- sp anything above  isn’t bad  …all depends on wear and TLC  (oil)   given to it

GC…. use john deere  corn head grease but  a good  grease clean up won’t hurt .

to PM  click on the  destination avatar on the side of page     select  message on the pop up screen     fill in  subject  title  then details    hit send…..done 🙂

70 to 75 psi  is good compression.
