Well, I don’t know what to make of that.

By the serial number, it should be a 1946. 1946=491737 to 538800

However, the model number pegs it as an earlier model, ie the HD 20 was the HD25 in 1946.

        So, I dunno

Of course you can post pictures here!

Just copy the ‘IMG’ code on your Photobucket page and paste it anywhere in your post.

Probably had something to do with WWII. HD-20 was made till the war shut down outboard production in 1942. Then at war’s end, the 1946 HD-25 was born—probably using a bunch of pre-war parts stored in the warehouse. That could also explain the presence of the spark suppressors I’ve been talking about.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Serial # indicates 1946, last year for the HD-20. The HD-25 was also produced in ’46..

OK, I am just getting around to getting back to this project. I just bought a magneto plate for a TD 20. Obviously the TD 20 plate won’t fit this HD20 motor. The coils and points are 90 degrees different between the two. The coils should swap out ok, but I am wondering about the Maverick spark suppressor. Should I use it on this motor, which had them, even though according to Johnson, it did not have them? I do not know what magnet rotor this motor has, or which cam. If I need to use the spark suppressor, which condenser should I use. I really hate soldering anymore than I have to on these coils. I will use a soldering gun with minimum heat, just enough to melt the solder. I figure if the spark suppressors are not used I would use the condenser that goes with that coil.

I really appreciate everyone’s help on this project. I think it will make a fine little motor. The original paint and decals are in good shape for it’s age.

The spark suppressors under the coils support the HD-20 model number.

Frank are you saying if I use the coils from the TD 20 that have NO spark suppressors, I should use the spark suppressors on this HD 20 motor? And which condensers should I use?
