Here is the combination of work from 2 fine artisans we have amongst us.

George made the Button part, and Mumbles made me the Cap. I so wish I had the talent to do such work.

I did get this motor started yesterday. I didn’t let it run long and sort of guess at the starting sequence from my other old square tanks and it fired off.

The more I look this motor over I think I will re-work it. I had just planned on making it a runner for the wood boat I am going to build, but plans have changed.

I noticed that even after torquing I can move the flywheel some and I am not comfy with that. I believe I need to replace the crank. If I am going to go through all of that I am going full bore with a cleanup and paint job.

I am now officially on the look out for a crank shaft for a 1950 Johnson PO 15 😀

I’m just happy the two parts work together! 😀

It can be tricky without measurements when the two builders are several thousand miles apart!

Don’t forget pictures and video of your PO when you get it running good!

Bill Salisbury wrote a good article in the Oct. ’70 issue of the Antique Outboarder Magazine about starting these motors.

It starts near the bottom of page ten at this link:
