Can you take a universal magneto and put it on an older qd that doesn’t have the universal? I have the opportunity to get an older qd but I’m sure the coils are shot as it looks like black melted tar has run everywhere. Thanks.

Here’s photos of a QD-11 with originals and update newer coils.

Bucc, it is known that you come up with creative solutions to unique problems, but I think that this is the first that I know of where the entire coil with armature got substituted. Normal fix would have been try to fit new OMC coils to the old armatures.

How did it work out? get spark?

Joe, those photos are ones that I “filed away”, not my project.
I did convert one of those early QD’s, but as you say, I put
OMC universal coils on the old lams, from what I remember.
For unknown reasons, I have no photos of mine, but
do remember it was “tricky”……… I think I had issues with
              the plug wire routing perhaps.

Tinman I have a QD12 1951 and it has the new coils and backing plate. The early QD’s ’49 and ’50 had the pushrod points.  That is QD 10, 11.  Some of the early 14hp Evinrudes and seakings also had pushrod points you might be able to find good ones out there!  I have a good backing plate  with coils for an Evinrude if you are interested PM me.
