Hi everyone I have a couple of questions on my lower unit. It’s a 1961 Johnson 40hp.
Here is a link to the parts
#1 Question: the prop shaft seal I ordered (sierra part 23.) The old seal had a rubber gasket totally surrounding the press fit seal. The sierra replacement does not. Is this the correct replacement?
Also it appears the new seal is installed backwards from the old. It has a small bevel edge. But I would think this one still needs to have the cup face inside to just like the last. That way the retention spring is inside on the oil side correct?#2 the brass shift rod bushing removal. Anyone know the proper size rod to hammer it out? I tried a few things but so far everything i have to to large or small?
#3 last question for the experts is the pinion bearing below the water pump. When I was about to install the oil seal over the bearing one fell out… It was snapped in half. Followed by several intact ones. (See small bearings below) It will for sure need a replacement.
Is there a proper tool to remove this bearing or can I leverage it out with a seal puller? Metal looks thin? Also can I just hammer the replacement back in gently?Link to bearing http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0376856
Thank you all this is my first time replacement on an omc motor

Johnson RDS-23 40hpJuly 3, 2020 at 9:55 pm #2075921. On the prop shaft seal, assume you mean part #35 in the ME diagram. The Sierra replacement seal should just be pressed into the oil seal housing – no perimeter gasket is needed. Yes, the lip side of the oil seal with the retention spring should face the oil side of the shaft.
2. The shift rod bushing can be knocked out with a 5/16″ punch but it takes a long punch to reach it. If you think you’ll be collecting more motors, it helps to have the original OMC service tool, part #304514 to remove and install the bushing.
3. Not sure on this one.

July 3, 2020 at 9:59 pm #207593#1 ????gasket surrounding the seal???? Nah. Yes, spring faces the oil
#2 Run a 5/16″ nc tap into the bushing a two or three turns. Screw a bolt into it. Now take a suit able rod or punch to the other end of the bushing, against the bolt, and knock it out.
#3 The needle bearing is shot. There is a special tool to remove the shell, but I never had one. Just used whatever piece of rod I had to knock it out from the bottom. In case you don’t already know, always press against the lettered end of a needle bearing to drive it in. A socket will do as a pressing tool.

Thanks a bunch on the 3rd tip. Yeah I have never dealt with bearings this small and I actually tried to pry it out and it broke. I think I’ll just keep tearing away work whatever to get it out.
I’ll be sure to press the number side for reinstall!👍
So glad I joined I’m getting lots of great info from this group!

July 4, 2020 at 12:11 pm #207642Yes I did find them all I’m pretty sure. Actually I got the bearing removed this morning. Someone had replaced it before I suspect and really scratched it up. It looks like someone really damaged the case wall where the bearing covers. No doubt trying to pry it out. You can see some in this picture.

Johnson RDS-23 40hpJuly 7, 2020 at 6:37 pm #208010Another help question?
I ordered a replacement needle bearing but got the wrong one. Researching it further this motor is showing a bushing instead of a bearing? Looking at my service manual this motor could have a bushing or bearing for later models. But no part number is listed.
Above is the link to RDS-23 parts. Part number 23 is a bushing but I need the part number for the bearing that goes there instead? Maybe my lower unit had been changed out?
Anyone have any ideas
Thanks
