481390 says ’43-’45. Mostly built for the military.

Very interesting – the 481390 serial number would indicate that model was built during World War Two. At that time it was against the law to sell recreational outboards. Motors sold to the Army Air Force and Marines were Olive Drab. Those sold to the Bureau of Ships were white. After the war, motors left in the warehouse and unneeded by the Armed Services were repainted for civilian sales. Your Johnson would have been Johnson Green with red decals. This "as found" model is rather faded …

These are TD (Deluxe) models with the Auto-rewind starters. Your TS model was $15 cheeper.

It seems like Art’s comment about the color has been lost early in this thread. The Johnson TS was silver, not green.

Many 1942 models were "trapped" in the warehouse when the resolution was passed to end civilian sales and switch to war work. After the war, in the rush to supply dealers, many were shipped "as is". The dealers were encouraged to repaint them and decals were offered at no cost. In the rush of post war sales, few bothered. Civilian production started in the fall of 1945 with green Johnsons. Prewar Johnsons were dull aluminum.

Not Sea Horse Green but Sea Mist Green. Sea Mist Green was used from 1946-1951. Sea Horse Green was used from 1952-1955.

I found more numbers on the power head. Td-15
Would this motor then have a recoil starter or pulley type?

The TD was the deluxe version with the auto rewind starter.
