I just bought a 1948 Johnson KD 15 it felt like it had a pretty good bounce when I pulled the recoil. I knew the coils were bad bot it looked pretty good with all parts there. Long story short I paid $100.00 for it , got home checked compression dry 80 lbs. upper cyl. zero compression lower cyl. pulled plug looked in bottom cyl. piston didn’t move when motor turned over. Do you think it is the connecting rod ? I have a connecting rod and camshaft that will fit it from another old KD 15 I will enclose pictures of motor do you think it is worth fixing or shall I use it for a parts motor. I will need coils also.

classicomctools@gmail.comJuly 27, 2018 at 12:25 pm #80200I can’t imagine it could be anything but the rod, but I’d think you’d
hear the broken rod "clunking" when pulled over, unless someone
had it apart and didn’t put the rod back in.
I don’t have any Johnson’s with the "dome top" rewind.
I do have a 1941 KS-15, and see it looks to be the same basic motor,
less the rewind.
I’m curious as to "how" the rewind base bolts to the power head,
and if at KS can be converted to a KD? I have no plans to do so,
but just wondering if the blocks are different.Prepare to be boarded!
July 27, 2018 at 12:45 pm #80204I’m concerned that both coils are bad. Those coils rarely went bad, but I have spares if you need them. Have you done an ohm test?

July 27, 2018 at 2:41 pm #80210Buccaneer , I will post a picture of the recoil base so you can see , it is bolted on to the powerhead . The picture is from a KD that I have that is just a pile of parts .
George , The coils might be alright I tested them with a ohm meter but only at the plug wires. ( tested bad ) The wires look good but I will know better when I pull the flywheel and read directly off the coil.
Richard , I live in Southern IN. I am that tall ugly guy that comes to the MOB meets not nearly often enough , distance and my wife’s health. I’m 6’6" and I’m sure you know me but don’t recognize my user ID. I will PM you if I need help on this when I tear into it.July 27, 2018 at 3:07 pm #80215Nope, don’t recognize the user name but you apparently know me..LOL
Cuz see I am a tall ugly guy, but I goto the meets..LOL
Let me know, we can figure something out…
In October there is a river run… I wish to try to make it to that one again…. It is at Broadripple Park in Indianapolis

classicomctools@gmail.comJuly 27, 2018 at 4:05 pm #80217Thanks for the photo. Looks like it would be easy to convert one
to a "rewind" model, assuming the parts from the flywheels
were interchangeable as well.quote sbrown21:Buccaneer , I will post a picture of the recoil base so you can see , it is bolted on to the powerhead . The picture is from a KD that I have that is just a pile of parts .Prepare to be boarded!
