I finally managed to remove the impeller cover. It is pretty thick, and I will be a able to reuse it.

What is the trick to installing the new impeller. It has to be installed over a pin that lies on a flat spot. I think I have to first put the impeller in a cylinder with the vanes already bent so that I can push the impeller straight in and lined up with the small pin.

      Any advice will be appreciated.

      Thanks,
      Jim

I use a piece of PVC pipe, whatever fits the impeller. Clean the propshaft and super glu the key to the shaft. After it sets, align the impeller and shove down onto the shaft/key. Luck helps a lot in getting it right the first time. Patience also helps. JW

I have seen (and I have tried) using a zip tie to get the vanes to stay where you need them to be. Wrap a zip tie around the impeller and work the vanes in the correct direction…..tighten the zip tie a little more …..get the impeller inserted to align with the key-way….then reach in and snip the zip-tie or just pull it off.

Maybe the PVC method would be better. I never tried that but will next time.

Thanks all…..I used a piece of two inch pvc pipe, and it worked perfectly.

PS…..got it right the first time….used grease to hold the pin in place

Smooth move, Jim. The pipe trick is not a Special Mercury Tool, but would have been if Carl had thought of it! 🙂 Cheers, JW

I made this tool to remove those pump covers.
                Another tip that came from
                jw in Dixie.

A "Boat House Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

I made a tool like JW’s, but the cover had elongated holes from when someone in the past used a punch to remove it. I tried several times with a punch and a heavy hammer before being successful…..I thought I was going to ruin the cover….it’s a good thing that it is thick.

I started the motor this morning, and it now pumps plenty of water.

The impeller I removed had 12 vanes. The replacement has eight.

Jim, if you’re REAL careful, you can use a bottom drill bit and make new dimples. A drill press is best so you can set the stop. (Stop just before it goes thru the cover!! ) Cheers, JW
