I know very little about motors beyond the general ideas as to how they run. Picked the motor up at a swap meet for $30. Price matches well with the “Free Boat”. There really is no such thing I find.

I need to get some ideas as to where I can find rebuild kits and perhaps a good source for how to begin a project such as this. I made it through college somehow, I ought to be able to learn something new here.

If anyone has guidance, please speak up.

      Thank you.<!–/data/user/0/com.samsung.android.app.notes/files/clipdata/clipdata_bodytext_240704_232603_340.sdocx–>

first thing is to check if it turns in case of mecanical problems… ex:  internal damage,  Gear case  all rusted up etc…

I find Evinrude’S are  easier to work on but  nice project nonetheless.

John’S old Mercury site can also be a good resource.

try to get a manual on your engine

then do  a compression  test before spending $$$$   look for equal values  +/-_10%    report PSI for comments

        parts look up

find  OUTBOARD     250  archive  under  2 stroke section.

        EzPartsWeb (sysonline.com)

Looks can reveal or conceal a greate deal both good and bad. Remove Rose Tinted Glasses. Conditionof old outboards will vary as will the ability and resources of those who wish to revive them. How much time and work space will be needed to restore motor so it will look and function as desired? At a minimum the fuel, ignition and water pump will need to be checked and usually parts replaced. Old seals are Bad seals, inexpensive , but, not easy or quick to access.

Careful checking prevents putting new shoes on a dead hors OR fixing things that are not broke.

Parts Manual specific to your year and model will explain much and give part numbers so you can ask for the right parts when needed.

Merc 250 is a one year motor that probably shares pars with other Mercs of same era and power.
