      I have a single cyl Lauson and I can’t find model # there is a #10057 on the front. The recoil starter is missing.

        You have what is commonly referred to as an OB-410 though there were several model #s that covered them. (A-410, 411, 431, etc…) I don’t recall if the model # was stamped on them, I want to say it was unobtrusively stamped on the transom bracket somewhere. Regardless, all the OB-410s were pretty much the same with only differences I’m aware of being the tiller pivot and lower unit shape. They were made from 1940 to 1947 and rated at 2.5hp – all are a 4-stroke design.

        The tank on your motor is from a later S-300 model as is evident by the starter mounts (I don’t think any of the OB-410s had recoils) and the beige paint showing through. (The tanks were pretty much the same save the starter mounts) It also looks like someone changed to the later recoil rope plate.

        They are decent running motors and worth restoring. You have the rear motor cover, something that is missing about 50% of the time. All of them I’ve come across also seem to be covered in house paint, they should be all silver hammertone from top to bottom with the decals (American Outboard is a source for them) as the only color. While not as smooth or quiet as a Johnson JW, at WOT the Lauson OB-410 won’t quite rattle the fillings out of your head, or deafen you like a swarm of angry wasps, as so many other small 4-cycles do. They are very pleasant at less than 2/3 throttle and will idle all day almost silently.

          Thanks LOTEC that was one of the most informative answers I have received on this site. I wondered why I never saw the older 410’s with the recoil. When I got it the flywheel was held on with a cotter key. I cleaned up the treads a put on a new 7/16 – 20 nut. After cleaning the points I got great spark and got it to run a little. Low compression 50 PSI. Since its a mixed match motor I may just part it out.

              Glad my thoughts were of help. I’m with Frank – that’s too nice a motor to part out! And 50 PSI isn’t low for them, they don’t make more than 70 or so in perfect shape – if you run the cobwebs out it may come up – though my experience is they don’t run terribly at 50. Remember it is a 4-stroke!

              An ad on the Webvertize or an email to Doug Penn may turn up the correct tank and rope plate. Back to your comment about parting it out, the fact is, with the exception of that rear cover, I don’t think you’ll find much of a market for the other parts off it. Then you’ll be left with just another 410 minus the rear cover! They really are decent little motors, if you have an interest in old outboards they are a unique and unusual addition to any collection. If you have no interest in it sounds like Frank may want it – or put the whole thing up for sale on the Webvertize.
