Hi friends i have a older lauson 4 cycle outboard in very nice original condition that was given to me as a gift from a fellow small engine collector i also collect lauson hit n miss engines anyway i cant seem to find much info on the outboards i will try to attach pictures thanks in advance
July 16, 2021 at 4:45 pm #242998The biggest snag you are likely to hit is the ignition coil. Most of them died/NLA 60 years ago. You may have to get creative. Other than that, they were good running engines. You’re lucky the lower cowls are there.

July 16, 2021 at 7:37 pm #243003Most of the time those lower covers are missing as Frank says. Usually the points need cleanig and gapped (0.020″). About 20 ounces of 30 weight non detergent oil will go into the crankcase. Usually never see these in that good condition. Definitely contact Mr Grell about the manual. Laying that motor down can be very messy if you don’t do it right.
July 17, 2021 at 10:53 am #243035Great thanks for the info i also own roughly 50 or so lauson small engines and was very happy to receive this addition to my collection i was thinking it must be from the later 40s early 50s ? It like all my other lauson small engines runs like a sewing machine any idea of the year ? Thanks friends

Like was said, often the coil is toast, melted down from high heat. A couple of theories on this…. running the motor with the lower shrouds may cause overheating because of mis-directed air flow from the fan. the other idea is long idle ??? maybe insufficient cooling air? In any case , if you find a bad coil the John Deere pony motor coil retrofit works good.Joe B
July 19, 2021 at 5:19 pm #243274Joecb, do you have photos of a JD pony coil transplant on a Lauson twin?
I only tried said transplant on a Neptune once with no luck.
Thanks.Prepare to be boarded!
July 19, 2021 at 7:12 pm #243286Bucc, I don’t have a photo of the transplant. I do know that it works, ref the attached video and member John Brice here in MI di a successful transplant. If you go e- bay for the JD pony motor coil you can see what they look like. I know that you have to shave down the armature laminations to fit the new coil. I’ll ask John if he has a photo.
