I found a Lauson twin cylinder 6hp that I was thinking of buying. This one has a neutral mechanism with a lever to shift it. I recently saw a post mentioning something about the coils and wondered if they are a problem to find a replacement for and also anything else to consider on this motor that is a problem or impossible to find. It has all the parts on it just needs a different tiller grip. It looks like a bicycle one.

      Thanks

I have used a John Deere pony motor coil as a replacement. The original laminations are 5/8ths inch square and must be ground down to 7/16ths inch. The neutral shifting model is not as common but shares most of the same parts as the direct drive. Don’t pay too much for this as they are not as popular a motor and probably won’t give a good return on your money.

          Thanks jcrigan
I was thinking of offering $75 for it, but maybe that is too much. It seems most old motors don’t have much resale value, so I don’t buy them thinking to get anything back out when selling. Just don’t want to pay too much to start with.

Does this Larson have a “Drive and Neutral shift or does it have the full F – N – Reverse” shift. ? My understanding is that the F-N-R was only offered a couple of years ( 51 – 53 ?) and was a very complicated transmission system. I think that the F- N system replaced that and , I guess was a much simpler set-up. Like was said , coils are commonly bad on these motors, but substitutes can be made to work.
ALSO , does it have the frequently missing lowed shrouds ? good if it does , very bad if not.

These are interesting motors. Noisy, as you would expect. I’d like to have one.

I looked at it again yesterday and it does have F N R. It also does have the lower cowls, so seems complete. I’m not sure about the tiller handle it looks possibly home made as I’ve seen some pictures with a shear pin compartment on them and this one doesn’t have that. It has some dents and scratches so it’s not the best condition but I can live with that.

I would suggest you get a manual for this motor if you end up with it. The shifting part is a little more complicated than other motors. These are harder to find than the other models.

Thanks for the info. I know someone that should have a manual for it.

The valves are prone to stick from sitting do not force rolling it over as you can bend a valve.
