I just bought a little homebuilt speedboat, with a Mercury Mark 25 on it. It was sold as "restored" by a local charity. I bought it as a fun knock-about without considering any perils of buying an antique motor.
With fresh gas, the motor was coaxed to life. It ran, but poorly, making what seemed to be only about 1/3 rpms to my untrained ear. After about 5 minutes of run time (on the river) it quit (the sound of the engine changed a bit for about 10 seconds before quitting. It sounded to me like it lost a cylinder.
I took it to a local mechanic that was recommended, and he literally refused to even look at it. I asked if he could just tune it up for me (as I’m sure that is a contributor to the problem. He suggested that it was only good for a wall hanger.
There is a sticker from AOMCI on it, and I thought I might find someone here who would be interested in the motor. I’d love to find someone in my region (north florida, south ga) who would be willing to make it river friendly for a few years. It’s way too pretty to just hang on a wall. I would entertain offers on the package as well, as they go so well together. Here are some photos. Any thoughts advice are appreciated. I know nothing of outboards.

In (I think) two weekends the North Florida chapter of AOMCI is having a meet at the Suwanee River at Old Town. If you can bring it there, we should be able to find someone to help you out with it.April 6, 2015 at 8:47 pm #13425Very dependable motors, wall hanger???? Nah get it fixed, well worth the money….

I would bet you could clean the points, maybe the carb, put some gas mix to it and run it as is. It looks really clean. I know there is a few people in your area that play with mercs and could have that going in no time may be they will chime in.

April 6, 2015 at 11:50 pm #13442Your local mechanic is only interested in making a quick dollar and old outboards are not his preference. One of our local members from your area can help resurrect your Mark 25.
Last summer, my neighbor purchased a 1958 Johnson 18HP that was a total wreck for $100 even after I suggested he pass on his purchase. As he left the dealer’s shop, the seller saluted him and told him "good luck!" It was a total basket case, but I hate to see people screwed with an old outboard, so he and I are rebuilding it from all of my scrap motors. He cannot wait to take it back by the dealer and show him his prize.
Like my neighbor, you need to join AOMCI if you haven’t already and support a local chapter. You will not be disappointed in the unlimited help and advice you will receive for no cost other than membership fees. Enjoy your new toy.

It is one of the most pleasurable meets we have. Introduce yourself and I am betting someone will have it up and going for you as I know for a fact there will be at least two Merc Gurus there that weekend. Saturday morning at the latest….some folks leave Saturday afternoon.
April 7, 2015 at 1:33 am #13450Tell that mechanic he is not worth his wrenches if he can’t fix a motor that doesn’t have a computer to tell him what needs fixing!!!!!
If you have too many, AND not enough, you're a collector.
April 7, 2015 at 10:29 am #13462Just curious, how much oil did you put in the gas? Also what type of oil did you put in the gas?
