Point checking and adjustment:
I’m not finding any type of mark on the mag plate and flywheel to set the orientation and check the gap as is done on other vintage motors.
Is there a trick or tip on how to check and set the point gap?
Gap, .020″ same as most?

The 62-T has a mark on the flywheel for setting the points
to open when it (the mark) is at the center of the mag lever.
The 72-T manual I have doesn’t give anything as to setting
or even the gap. The Old Outboard Book list the point gap
at .020 and the plugs at .025.

February 17, 2024 at 10:28 pm #285111Just observe the points through the two holes in the flywheel, and adjust through
the holes. You might need to make a feeler gauge out of shim stock to fit through
the flywheel hole better. You’ll have to go back and forth between the two holes
adjusting, and checking the gap. Observe the points opening during a few
revolutions afterward to make sure they’re only opening .020.Prepare to be boarded!
February 18, 2024 at 7:31 am #285113This makes total sense being there are no timing marks to work from. Shouldn’t be that difficult I have a set of smaller feeler gages that will work well for this application. Thanks for noting to set to a max gap of .020″.

February 19, 2024 at 3:42 pm #285150Update: Pleased to report I now have strong spark at both plugs!
- Points set to .020″
- Taped spark plugs solder connections.
- Grounded both spark plugs while testing.
- D16 spark plugs gapped at .032″
Appreciate all the input & feedback.

February 19, 2024 at 4:14 pm #285151That’s great! That coil seems to be a very good replacement considering how few of the original “laminate” rods you use.
February 19, 2024 at 5:04 pm #285153Agreed, I was pleased to see such a strong spark. I saved the extra rods.

Here is one for sale. That one seems a bit over priced.
However the one I own has got to be worth twice that!!!!

.February 28, 2024 at 12:06 pm #285371I also saw this one, looks a bit rough.
I’d be in for the tiller handle & muffler shell bolts.
72T muffler shell mounting bolts are slightly different lengths.
Per the seller, bolts for sale on eBay are both the same length. Might be able to alter the length on one bolt to work. I’m looking to find a dimensional sketch for these bolts if anyone has this info.
I’d be glad to buy if someone has a set for sale.
I should probably post a new topic on this.
