Hi folks, I’m looking for an Evinrude 35 hp 1956 or 1957 in good to excellent condition. I’m not as concerned about the model as I am about the condition. I would prefer that it be in excellent original condition but as long as long as it doesn’t have any dents or dings and can be restored to excellent condition then I’m interested. If it has the original controls that would certainly be a bonus but is not necessary! I’m located in Texas but love to travel and see new places and am willing to go just about anywhere! Thanks, Jeff. 512-541-0782
February 2, 2020 at 11:53 am #193776The 35s were made in 1957 through 1959. 1956 was a 30 HP. Unless you are partial to Evinrudes, you may also want to look for Johnsons of the same years – same motors, different outer case and color. Evinrudes were available as Big Twins, and as Larks in those years, with the Larks having different color and trim for 1957-58. Similarly, Johnson had the optional Golden Javelin in 1957, and for 1958, the fancy gold Johnson model was called the Super Sea Horse, that was “super quiet” and also had a thermostat in the cooling system. For 1959, the Johnson and Evinrude 35s, including the lark, had a 1-piece fiberglass case and a thermostat in the cooling system.
You may want to mention in your posts if you want a short or long shaft motor, a lot of both models were made back then.
Good luck with your search. You may want to also put a WANTED ad on the classified board here.
DaveFebruary 2, 2020 at 1:04 pm #193790Hey Dave, Thanks for your response! I totally forgot that the 35 didn’t come out until ’57. I did post in the Wanted ads that I would also be interested in a Johnson of the same size and vintage. My boat is a ’56 so I’d like to keep as close as possible to that year but if a really nice example of a slightly later model came available I would certainly consider it.

If you haven’t already found a motor, I am very nearly finished with a complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration on a 1956 Johnson 30hp. Completely rebuilt powerhead (new rings, bearings, crank seals, honed cylinders), all new gaskets and seals, all new ignition system, carb overhaul, new water pump, gearcase reseal job, new gearcase bearings and clutch dog, added electric starter, a fuel pump conversion and fresh paint and decals. You can follow the start to finish story in the Current Projects section here on the Forum, under the thread “Next Project – 1956 RD-18”.I’m out of town for the next week or so, but when I return I’ll be putting the last finishing touches on it and will post some final completion pics and a video of the first test run. I had intended on hanging on to this motor for awhile but I MIGHT be tempted (but no promises) to let it go if you are interested. And I also live in Texas and judging by your area code, you could pick it up at my place in the morning and have it on your boat the same afternoon.

Sounds good! I’ll be happy to look at the pics and video once you’ve got them up. Since your user name is “Rockport Bob” I’m assuming you’re in Rockport?

If I were you, I’d jump in the truck and head to Atlanta to get this motor. No way I can sell my ’56 Johnson for that kind of price for what I’ve invested in the restoration. I might go get this Evinrude myself!Bob
