Taking lower unit off .. I have taken the trim tab/water intake off to reveal one of the nuts holding it on . So there are 4 nuts holding it on ..
Is there anything I should know before trying to drop the unit . Remove the shift rod correct ? There is a spring around it right before it goes into the housing . Do I remove that spring ?
Just trying to know what to expect before I drop it .. I ‘d like to be able to put back on easily at some point ..LOL!

that is usually a frozen shift shaft coupling. I use wedges on both sides of the shaft. MOST TIMES it comes apart.

Is the ss coupling located in the drive shaft housing or the the gear shaft housing ? No way to squirt some oil on it is there …
There is a screw in the DS housing located starboard side in the front . A grease plug ? Reverse lock hole maybe ? Just wondering if it could be greased up from there …

it is about 2-3 in up in the ds housing. look down thru the opening. yes the plug is for grease to the reverse lock cams.

Got it loose finally ! I stacked some washers on top of the upper mounting nuts and loosened the nuts . Thus pushing it down against Drive shaft housing ..
About 3 good turns and popped it loose …

Fantastic. I was rooting for you. That one small step is the difference between a great motor and an anchor.

Finally cleaned up my work bench enough to take the first look inside of the gear case . This part came apart pretty easily ..
From my uneducated eye it looks fairly clean with no corrosion so far ..
