reading the service info on the 9.5 .. it states that the oil wick should not have oil added to it ??
is it because the kit issued wick contains enough…
I sometimes use sticky felt pads to cut up new rub pads …then I add a drop of 90 grade oil

November 20, 2019 at 9:59 am #187577Well, a new oiler wick is certainly lubed well enough, no additional oil is required. But, I usually add a drop of heavier oil if reusing the old oiler wick. The manual probably prescribes not attempting to “oil the oiler wick” fearing that too much oil will spray over the mag plate and points.

November 20, 2019 at 11:13 am #187590probably would not soak all the way in ….. unless first warmed up to liquid state
come to think of it has anyone ever had problems with the wick not doing it’s job (premature wear on rub blocks)

November 20, 2019 at 12:39 pm #187601Right on Mister Tubs! I watched my daddy replace many a set of points and he always put that little dab of grease on the rubbing block, so do I. I have had those oiler wicks come off and jam into the second set of points. Sometimes they get left off and I sure don’t worry about it.

November 20, 2019 at 1:09 pm #187604The OMC wicks back in “The Day” were saturated with a greasy substance that didn’t throw off. That’s why you were not supposed to add any oil. Not really “saturated”, but you know what I mean. I Haven’t bought any new wicks in recent years, so don’t know what’s on them now.
Come to think of it, back in “The Day”, they sold “cam lube” at auto parts stores for that purpose. Wonder if that stuff is still around? I’ll bet if you ask the kid at the counter for cam lube you will get camshaft lube. Camshaft as in 4-stroke valve cams, that is.
November 20, 2019 at 1:19 pm #187605Tubs, I look at that picture and still have to laugh. Back in “The day”, a not-to-bright customer came in and bought a set of points. He opened the box and saw the lube capsule. “What’s that for?” he asked. My co-worker Charlie said “You swallow that pill 10 minutes before installing the points and it will dilate your eyeballs so you can set the points without a feeler gauge”. The guy said that made sense and left happy.
November 20, 2019 at 1:27 pm #187606I just did a search on Amazon and came up with “Personal Lube for men, women and couples”. Not exactly what I had in mind. But scrolling down, found this.
https://www.amazon.com/WVE-NTK-9A1000-Distributor-Lubricant/dp/B07GKS3FJ8/ref=sr_1_14?keywords=cam+lube&qid=1574274031&sr=8-14November 20, 2019 at 2:30 pm #187614It’s been a while since I posted this informatio, but it’s still appropriate. Warm up some Bees wax, soak the old felt wick in it, and shake off the excess. You might even want to squeeze out any excess. Once it cools, it will be a great source of cam lube. Did it for years on our Mercury Mk20H and Kg4H racing engines. No cast-off of the lube was ever noted. R.T.
