Yes, I have seen rubbing block wear…Don’t know if it was from high hours or lack of lube. I have a close look at the rubbing blocks when deciding whether to reuse old points also. I have rejected many old sets due to excessive wear….

Back in the day….ok ….way back in the day, I was a field engineer with IBM and serviced high speed punch card machines. These machines employed some large (long) cams that spun at very high speeds. They were always lubed with “grease wicks”. Even in a hot and very dusty environment, these cams always were clean and never scorched. Taking a lesson from this, I make my wicks from the furniture pads and then use a grease, like Corn head, press it into the pad. I really work it in for several minutes, then wipe off any excess. I have never experienced any failure or cam scorching.

I have used Petro-Gell, used on surgery tables, made from mineral oil, like a gel after cleaning with acetone on the cam without any migration. Also never brought up is the points return spring pressure. Don’t know about OMC but Mercury service manuals show spring pressure that is acceptable as not to wear out the rubbing block or float. The tool looks like a scale of sorts with increments of tension.
