That sure looks like a pre-mix motor.

One can also go to Mercury Marines on line parts catalog for Mariner info.

Some of the earlier Mercs used the inline oil injection unit that sat inside the boat. It was inline with the boat fuel line. Was that called Accu Mix?? or maybe Econo Mix?? something like that anyway. I don’t know if that engine would have used that type system or not. Bill will probably know.. this was a completely self contained unit that injected the oil into the fuel stream as it passed thru before it got to the motor. I remember a Mercury instructor saying to throw these away, and to get rid of them, if one ever came into the shop. Evidently they had problems.

            Thank you Jerry,
That would make sense given the way things are laid out under the hood. It’s really tight in the back of the carb area on this motor. I’m going to pull the air box for a better view just to be sure. I know for sure their is no oil pump mounted under hood. With the Holidays and all the Friends and Family coming and going this past week it’s been hard to sneak away for a complete investigation.

I may still have one of those old oil injection units around somewhere. I’ll see if I can find it and post pics..

Put some black tape over the "oil injection" call outs on the hood so there is no confusion in the future….Looks like a nice clean engine…

I seem to recall it being called "Auto Blend" and our instructor telling us the same thing…ding ’em. I don’t know if they were ever used with Yamaha built Mariners. I never saw one in that application; but there is plenty I haven’t seen.

Clearly the one in this thread must have been available either way…premix like it is currently or actual Yamaha injection, as evidenced by the under cowl tank in my earlier link to ebay.

                  Long live American manufacturing!

                    Bill,
If you look at my pictures I think you were right about it originally being a tiller motor as well. The motor seems to have the factory remote conversion kit installed. I’m wondering if the dealer altered the motor when purchased. The large knuckle is present where the tiller arm would have bolted on. Could be that the dealer converted it run premix. Like I said, everything looks factory. Nothing looks like Joe shadetree was ever under the hood.

Bill that’s right, Auto Blend. Looks like a nice motor, not common around here anyway

🙂 Thanks to all that helped me figure this thing out. If the temps get above the current -5 degrees this week it might be warm enough to go in the garage and mess with it. Gotta love winter in Wisconsin
