Awhile back, some of you may recall me crying about accidentally destroying a nice Mark 28 faceplate while working on my restoration project. I decided to take a crack at making a replica. First, I had a decal vendor replicate the faceplate in vinyl. Although it lacks depth, the vendor did some embossing and shadows to give the illusion of depth. I traced the decal on a sheet of Lexan polycarbonate, cut it to size, and applied the decal. I used my Exact-o knife to trim the decal edges flush to the Lexan. After allowing a couple days for the decal to adhere, I made a form out of multiple layers of automotive painters tape (yellow), and poured in an epoxy resin mixture. I let the epoxy cure for over a week, removed the tape form, and cleaned up the edges with the Exact-o knife. Not a perfect replica, and not rocket science either…but I am happy with the results. You be the judge.

Great job Jason! I have often felt that the Mk-28 was Mercury’s best looking face plate hands down!
