So One Martin 40 starts on 2 pulls, the other nothing.
I have checked spark, good both cylinders
I have checked condensers, both test fine
points polished and gaped.
fresh fuel, oil ratio correct.
cleaned carburetor, floats not sticking.
Primer is working.I was told that this engine was a hard starter in 1955, it’s still true and accurate.
suggestions on next step to getting results on two pulls?1 user thanked author for this post.

classicomctools@gmail.comSeptember 29, 2020 at 1:53 pm #217551I once had a Martin and it started very well. Agree with checking the O rings on the valves.

September 30, 2020 at 4:00 am #217574Make sure the poppet valves completely close. Then lap them in.
September 30, 2020 at 8:01 pm #217606I’ve got many years as a youth and young adult with a martin 40. Don’t know of a primer on one but there is a choke…ya need to find out if it is a lean or rich starter first. Make sure choke closes fully.
Mine ran so much better after I put on a diaphragm carb off a techumsah 2 stroke 5hp…way back in 1973 or so. Vertical throttle shaft made it easy.

October 4, 2020 at 11:53 am #217778this model has the flex line to prime the engine. I have the front cowl off so I can see the primer move and smell gas. the second unit I spoke of has a different carburetor set-up for the primer. straight shaft, no flex line. i am thinking the condensers may be an issue in getting this unit started. My method of testing (based on recent article in Outboarder) magazine was lacking the proof needed.
October 4, 2020 at 11:56 am #217779thanks I will look at this also..sounds like this issue may be an on-going and long issue for the grandfather. could be how he was able to buy it from the marina where he rented a boat.
June 27, 2021 at 11:55 am #241390So Friday this week I got back to work on the motor. 40 minutes of pulling produced a start and fair run. so I went form rebuilding a leaking carberator to thinking that was the magic bullet. next day went out pulled three times, almost turned over . 20 minutes later I broke the recoil starter pawl that engages the flywheel.
so is this motor effected electronically – or mechanically?
I’ll pull the coils and condensers and upgrade.
as to the recoil any one have experience with repairing the pawls?
It appears I will have to contend with the rewind spring.June 27, 2021 at 6:49 pm #241417
