I have no idea about the Martin, But the Neutral Clutch Evinrude Fleetwin also uses the Tillotson MD carburetor and this is what they have to say. . . 🙄

According to the Martin tech sheets the "preliminary adjustment" for the high speed needle is to seat the needle and back it out 3/4 turn. With the low speed needle seat the needle and back it out 1/2 turn. Again, these are the preliminary adjustments.

A peculiarity about this carburetor is that the fuel supplied at an idle is determined by the idle pick up tube running down through the Venturi into the high speed nozzle. The adjustment screw regulates the amount of air in the mix. Screwing it in enriches the mixture. If it seems to have no effect (the motor runs lean with it all the way in) the pick up tube is blocked.

Another thing, the high speed needle extends into a seat in the upper carburetor body. It must be removed before the carburetor bowl is separated from the body. If it is not, the needle will be bent and rendered useless. . . 🙄

From my experience, the air metering low speed needle is touchy, and must be adjusted very slowly or in small amounts to adjust properly. Pause between each movement of the needle to allow the motor to catch up, and to see how it likes the new setting. i have a martin 45, that idles extremely slow. it’s a toss up between it and my CC Challenger on which one will idle slower. Both motors have an air metering low speed [idle] circuit.

Totally agree with the low speed adjustment being very touchy. I have that to say about every engine that uses this style of Tillotson carburetor. They are pretty finicky in my experience. I do have a Martin 60 I haven’t started messing with yet.

My Tillotson carb on my 7.5hp Firestone works the same way. I find it must be on the boat & the high speed jet set before adjusting idle jet as most motors require.
