Are there supposed to be some parts in between where my screw driver is pointing? Looks like there are in the parts catalog but hard to tell. That spring and sleeve may be pressed in there?
Looks like all there really is to the carb is to clean it up, replace 2 pieces of packing and the gasket on the screw at the bottom of the bowl. Also the carb mounting gasket. Anything else?
Thanks for any info you can provide.

I was guessing a tension washer, but don’t see one
on my parts tray.Prepare to be boarded!
June 21, 2020 at 12:00 am #206250I circled those parts in the upper right of your photo. I think it’s this spring and sleeve that i need. Unless they’re stuck indide? I will check tomorrow.

June 21, 2020 at 12:09 am #206254Buc, what did you need for the carb o/h? Just packing pretty much?
I assume that’s dull aluminum for the paint color? What brand paint did you wind up using?
June 21, 2020 at 6:19 am #206256It’s probably been thirty years since I had my MS-39 apart, which is similar; so I don’t remember many details about the inner workings. I do remember that it was pretty hard to get going, even with new-at-the-time rings. I also remember that it would not even fart unless the initial setting on the carb was set at exactly 5/8 of a turn out….
Long live American manufacturing!
June 21, 2020 at 8:19 am #206261Scott, I think I only needed new packing on the needle and made a new cork float.
DupliColor Aluminum is my “go to” paint unless I’m working on a Rembrandt.Mine was anemic on compression and I had to use a drill to get it going.
It seemed to get better after running a few times.Prepare to be boarded!

Here’s a better picture of the parts in question. How did you get that spring and sleeve out of there? Or were they loose to begin with?I wonder if they really need to come out or not.

June 25, 2020 at 10:11 pm #206732Hey Buc, i tried sending you a pm but i don’t know f it worked. Also i tried to attach a link to this thread but that probably didn’t work either.
Wondering where that big thin washer goes? Over the barrel valve then into the carb?
Also notice that brass sleeve and spring look like they may be stuffed into my choke mechanism? They don’t seem to want to come out. Did yours come out easy? What does that spring do? Mine won’t budge.
???
Thanks!

June 26, 2020 at 10:05 am #206757Scott, I don’t remember the brass sleeve and spring being stuck, but you could
remove the choke butterfly and lever, and tap the brass sleeve and spring
out from the choke end, with the appropriate tool.
My brass sleeve moves freely inside the bore.
The “thin” steel washer goes along the right, (towards the front of the motor) of
the throttle spool assembly. (the part that the control rod from the mag hooks to)
Sorry for the fuzzy photos.Prepare to be boarded!

June 26, 2020 at 1:29 pm #206777Thanks buc. I would rather not remove that choke if I don’t have to. It’s peened in there.
I don’t understand what that sleeve does. Does anyone know? When yours moves freely, does it go back and forth from the choke housing into the carb body? Due to the diameter, mine doesn’t look like it can move anywhere.
Tubs or Lloyd, any insight on this is art or its intended function?
Thanks!
Scott
