Cleaning out sheds this came back into view. Complete and spark one pot……..

It has something different about the gearbox that my other one does not have.

In reverse the prop is locked either way that it is turned. Clunk Clunk aye.

Out of gear is out of any gear.

Forward prop driving is solid………then turning prop backwards, like throttling down on the water the prop freewheels with what feels like a very fine ratchet working in side. Driven the prop behaves as normal………….back off the power and a sizzle noise from within.

      Clunk ratchet.

      Strange

I will resize my pics as too big for the future

      Regards

I thought to look in my collection of "Good Books"…..perhaps that is why I have them 😳

Maybe something here that would be the reason?

I only have two of these……….I will not turn to the darkside…….something earlier will come along for me.

        Cheers

Funny motors the 60’s. It takes a moment or two to understand the shifter on them. Push down or pull forwards, and the boat goes in reverse. Push the shift lever backwards or up, and the dang boat goes forwards if I remember right. Or maybe that was on another small Merc motor….

It is supposed to lock in reverse and ratchet in forward, on that one. Sometimes they ratchet in reverse, too. Make sure that gear case stays well lubed!

            Long live American manufacturing!

Nobody knows those Mercs better than Bill Wright, especially the salty ones!

The shift dog has ramps on forward & reverse has square chunks to engage. My 63 200 is the same. Half OMC & half ScottAtwater shift dog. That guy you can’t flip over either. Perfectly normal for Mercury 😛

This is the theory I’ve heard on why Mercury ramped their forward gear/dog… Not sure if it’s the actual reason or not, but it makes sense…

Mercs automatically release the tilt lock when in forward gear, the motor is free to tilt up if you have a sudden deceleration. This is made worse if the prop can’t "free wheel".

I like to row and when my Merc 9.8 is in the water in forward….I can hear the "CLICKING" of the prop. The harder I row….the faster it clicks.

                      I like it!

Probably why I am an OMC man with but two white Mercs………I never liked oars!

                        😆 😆
