My older motor is stamped like the picture, this one I haven’t located a number.
It does have spark hoping to get it to fire up…
My older engine shaft is rusty and allows the water pump to leak into the gear case.
April 25, 2024 at 12:37 pm #287313I dont know the cost but you could check blast welding technique on the drive shaft …or find a good one to replace yours.
blasting vaporizes new metal onto the wear area which can then be resized to spec. cost ??????

April 25, 2024 at 9:02 pm #287328So now I have ran into another issue the throttle linkage has been messed with and I would like to find the replacement parts. Still no sign of a serial number..
The linkage is very sloppy and someone has drilled holes in the shaft and arms… The shaft that goes into the gear for the tiller is a circle with a flat spot. The top is plastic and is supposed to be pinned on with a roll pin. The shaft also has a nylon bushing with 2 tabs to hold in into the engine casting.
April 25, 2024 at 10:17 pm #287331Well I think if it was me I would start with the serial number range for a 1972: 3266263-3482752. Hit Marineengine.com and try and get part numbers for the things you need.
Then; armed with part numbers you can do a search on e-bay etc . Lots of those sellers have pictures of their parts so you can do a visual check against yours to see that they are correct.
If you haven’t already….run the engine first to whatever extent you can. Check for decent running, shifting, cooling etc. before you start spending money. Parts can add up fast. Lots of folks just hold off until an affordable parts motor turns up.

April 26, 2024 at 8:12 am #287335EX; on my 1976…..Merc 7.5hp …..last winter project
Paid $125 if I recall (sorry bad memory 🙂
- Compression tested > 105psi x 2
- $200 Tip of skeg reweld job (got taken an extra $100 on an estimate of $98)
- $100 Port side plastic screw clamp handle missing so …. Ebay for a port side transom bracket and a plastic screw clamp
- $30 impeller kit ( Approx.$ memory again 🙁 )
- $30 carb kit ( Approx.$ memory again 🙁 )
- $50 misc stuff Mercury Black paint , front Trolling lock tab missing, cowl trim rubber
Total approx. $500-$550 give or take…. was it worth it for me…. YES!
- Spent winter hours fiddling around on my hobby in the basement instead of watching snow flakes coming down
- Got a good engine restored
- $500 is just one afternoon at the Casino anyway and I usually get nothing from that investment ! ..frequently
- No smoking expenses at $8-10 a pack, skiing , snowmobileing …jus occasionnal wine !
- I’ll resell it any way and will recoup most of it …….50% would still be good ! (if not I’ll give it to a kids org.)
