April 18, 2020 at 5:17 pm #200449AnonymousTested the impeller this morning running the lower unit under water powered by my drill and it was pumping water. Spoke with Dave and began tearing into the engine to look for impeller fins. Found two impeller blades lodged in the lower cylinder water jacket where the tube comes up from the lower unit. Was excited to finally find the source of the overheating. Cleaned everything up, flushed everything, blew air through everything and put everything back together. Took a good part of the day. Fired it up and was spitting water out of top three holes. I was relieved but that didnt last long, about 20 seconds into running it quit spitting water again. I guess there is another impeller somewhere in the water jackets that I didnt get out. For now im just gonna put her on the shelf and wait until i have more time to tear it down farther. Thanks for all the help i will give an update when I get started on it again.

April 24, 2020 at 6:56 pm #200971AnonymousI tore the motor back apart took off foot, both covers around cylinder and exhaust. Didnt find any impeller blades or blockages but i blew everything out, flushed everything and put it back together. It starts and spits water for about 20 seconds, once it warms up no more water and gets hot. If i let it sit for a few hours it will do the same thing, spray water for 20 seconds then quit. Cant figure it out for nothing. Makes no sense to me..
October 18, 2023 at 2:38 pm #281798I am restoring a Merc KE 4 . Went on this site to learn how others were removing water pump cover. (I destroyed my Mark 20H plate and had to replace it.).
As was looking in my tool drawers, I ran across this spanner wrench I’d found at a garage sale. It is made by Wright Tools (tool number 9636). I tried it and it worked. I had to tap the end of the tool with a peen hammer and used Kroil penetrant, but plate released fairly easily. Don’t think it has ever been removed previously. I’m adding a photo. Tool might be available at White Cap stores or ordered from them.
it’s adjustable and pins fit perfectly and just long enough. Mine is a 2” version.
hope this helps

October 18, 2023 at 5:30 pm #281807I’m rebuilding a Mercury KE 4. Remembering what a pain it was to replace the impeller in my Merc 20H, I was not looking forward to the chore of replacing the KE 4’s water pump cover. So I went on line and found this site. Still no easy answer. BUI…I remembered I had found a tool I believed would work in a garage sale. I found it and tried it. Worked like a charm—even though I don’t believe the impeller had ever been replaced.
It’s called a Spanner wrench, made by Wright Forged Tools. And they still make these. Mine is a 2” model (tool “9636). I called the company and they said these can be ordered through White Cap tool stores (Nat’l chain). The 2” is smallest, and adjustable. They have a 3” and a 4” , but size of tangs are larger. My 2” fit this motor perfectly. With a few taps with a peen, it loosened.
Here are photos of mine.
Hope this tool works for others, too.

October 18, 2023 at 10:23 pm #281844The pin wrench would be a good investment if one was working on
