February 11, 2022 at 12:05 pm #254415I have a pair of vice grips with a slot ground into 1 jaw to let the pin exit. works well both directions.
February 11, 2022 at 4:28 pm #254427Your tool worked pretty slick Tubs. I would have been tempted to cut
the ends of the pins off, remove the bolts, then drive out the pins
in the vice with a punch. Of course, you’d have to make new pins!Prepare to be boarded!

No thank you Dale. I’m really more interested
in Pre WW-II motors. Use to be a lot of
discussion about “Super 10’s”. I bought one
out of curiosity not knowing anything about
the different models. Some say they are hard
to work on but I don’t think they are. You do
need to have, or make a tool to do some
repairs. First time I fired it up it
was clear what all the bragging was about.
Ran it a bunch most of the summer and
then gave it to a friend. The Hurricane gets
a lot of interest so the Lightning can be
found as cheap as free. I’ve been told
that mechanically the only difference
is 8 reads instead of 4 and a slightly larger
carburetor. This one looked to be being
storied out outside but the gas in the tank
didn’t smell bad. I probably would have still
passed on this one except for this option.
There was an article about these in a resent
Outboarder. I don’t know how hard they are
to come by but the few I have seen sell went
for as much as he was asking for the motor.
Almost done. Plan is to use it this summer.

February 13, 2022 at 8:21 pm #254562Good pick for a project –it’s interesting to see the high degree of engineering in the magneto timing control.
Heavy buggers though. I had one on my Minimost before acquiring my Mark 25. The KF/Lightning/Cruiser’s weight made them worthwhile when you see how fast they go.

They’re heavy for me as well and are getting
heavier every year. Its why I got rid of the
first one. I find they are easier to handle with
the gas tank off. Then I put the tank back on
once its on the boat. The guy I gave my first
one to also has a 1960’s 18hp. Johnson. The
lightning is just as fast and according to him
its 20lbs. lighter. I know someone who might
want this one after I get to run it some. Don’t
plan on keeping it either.

February 15, 2022 at 8:58 am #254622I have a few of the throttle systems for green tank Merc’s. Also have a working set up on a KF-7 and a KE-4.

Do you have the round nuts that mount it to
the block? They were missing on few I have
seen offered for sale. Someone with a lathe
could make some easy enough.
