I bought a Lightning for a winter project.
Wanted to see what it will be needing.
The tiller looks to have had a crack in it
for quite some time and it went the rest
of the way today.
Although it wasn’t advertised as a running
motor it started right up but it wasn’t
pumping any water out the exhaust holes.
The cartridge looked like it may have been
out of alignment so I took it out and
re-positioned it. Tried it again and discovered
it was actually pumping water but its all
coming out the pivot pin. Shouldn’t there be
something in here to block or restrict some
of the water so it goes into the drive shaft
housing?

September 4, 2021 at 10:28 am #246114The nut for the lower unit stud in the pic is a hex. it should be a SQUARE, and for a reason. If it is square and synced so the powerhead will drop in the nut will not turn an loosen up . a hex can turn and loosen.
September 4, 2021 at 12:11 pm #246120I don’t remember whether my KF7 has water coming out of the pivot pin or not but it definitely blows out the rear holes in the exhaust housing, as spray. I mean, you have GOT to cool the exhaust housing somehow….
Long live American manufacturing!
September 5, 2021 at 8:04 am #246147If you look at bottom of engine will see small hole in front of drives shaft. This is the discharge hole for cooling the bottom bearing. .
Most of water goes through block them through exhaust water jacket and dumped in exhaust .. Are the small exhaust holes stopped up, I don’t see dots of light in photo.September 5, 2021 at 9:35 am #246155.

The exhaust holes were open. I was expecting
water to exit those holes as it does in the Mark
7 I have. It looks to me as though water should
pass through this channel to cool the bearing
housing then down the exhaust housing. Looks
like the square nut has been replaced with a
locking tab.

I’m referring the this area where it looks to
me where the water should be going instead
of down the pivot tube.
