the scintilla magneto that is without the plastic cover does not have the clearance issues that the magneto with cover and the cam on the magnet does I have had no issues other than dead condensers and cracked coils

Do I need to do a full tear down??

Removed the KD3 (scintilla) coil today so I can replace the rotting sparkplug wire– It wasn’t even soldered on?!!!!

Of course one of the clips flew off (I thought it made the distinct noise of landing in a particular box, but can’t find it)!

Coil tests as 1 ohm on the primary, and 6490 on the secondary (had spark before opening it up).

    The condenser measures 0.354 microFarads.

Sometimes the spark plug leads are soldered and sometimes not.
I can not say which is factory and which is not. It seems to have
worked either way, The single magneto can be assembled with
coil in port side or starboard location and many have a portion broken
out of the wrong location…I assume to prevent improper assembly
that would only be noticed when attempting to start motor,
Something keep in mind is that Bendix coils on singles and possibly early twins were smaller in diameter than coils used in later production.
Apparently Bendix added more turns to increase voltage output
The fat coils can be installed with a little effort in the earlier
magneto plates. Speaking of which the military surplus coils may
also be installed with a little McGivering.
