The number I found on the Mk5 gear case was ME5824,
which doesn’t seem to match up with any of the case
numbers on the Marine Engine.com’s diagrams. I did
find an old listing on EBay using that same number,
and it was listed as a MK 5 housing.
Previous measurements didn’t find any differences between
the Mk5 & 6 gear cases I had, but the Mk 5 does have a thinner
ball bearing, and believe it did have a spacer in that case.
Will double check everything again. Got the two new roller
bearings installed this evening….. so far, so good!
      Thanks.

the ME##### was the first way they #ed things then changed to the new system. you need an OOOOld book for the ME#’s. Johmsoldmercsite has a copy of the cross reference of old to new ###s

I forget the math but to set up a dial face with 360 degrees & a pointer on the shaft will show the gear travel from both sides of the opposite gear. Convert dial pointer to gear travel for the formula. Been too long for me to remember. Make sure the driveshaft has been pulled up using a spring & C clamp to lock the driveshaft in the seated position.

I think a picture would be worth a thousand words here!
I’ll do some Internet searching. I remember doing a truck
axle in vo-tech close to 40 years ago, but just remember
checking pre-load with a spring scale.
              Thanks!
