Great little outboard! Look by the prop & you will see two small filler plugs. Behind the plugs are gears & shafts to supply the power made to the prop for power. The driveshaft from the motor it’self goes down to the gears so the prop shaft will turn in a horizontal rotation. Check the gears & shafts cavity for grease by opening the filler plugs & let it drain into a clean glass jar for 24 hours, Then refill from the bottom filler plug until the lube comes out the top filler plug.
Will someone help him with the best lube to use? I use the tractor grease but can’t remember the name of it. Been out of the loop from illness so help him please.
Good luck, great fishing motor. I own a Mercury KF5 which is an earlier model of the 5hp twin cylinder, fun little motors!

Lower unit grease = John Deere Corn Head Grease.
Available at any John Deere dealer.

You can also use Lubriplate 105 in the lower unit. Make sure you replace the impeller. At worst it will have taken a set and not pick up water very well but could have blades break off and plug up the water jacket if you try to start it. I have seen both cases with old outboards. I would recommend replacing the float or coat it with fuel proof airplane dope. Clean the carb and fuel tank well usually a lot of crud in the tank sometimes hides in the front of the tank out of site. Run fuel at @24:1 ethanol free if you can find it. May get lucky with the coils but if they are cracked replace them.

Yes, cornhead grease is what I was thinking of. I too have used 105 grease but it states to be assembly grease. It works fine except it mixes with water too easy. It also drys out too. I have fixed coils that have cracks before using super corona dope if the windings are still good. Many have not agreed with me but it has worked for me. Corona dope was built for flyback transformers to stop arcing. Contact me if your interested in how I repair my cracks.

What should the spark plug gap be set at? I bought two new plugs.

Cute little motors. Note that this one has the neutral built into the top handle with the little button to release it.

+1 on JD Corn Head Grease, great stuff.

Both cylinders are between 105 and 110 psi on my compression gauge. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement gear housing besides ebay?

try the repair while you are looking.
send the ebayer a ??????? and offer him what you want.
