January 31, 2017 at 8:50 am #52197take off the nut and use a puller.
February 1, 2017 at 3:37 am #52235When the shaft is turned on the lower unit it makes a noise. Is this due to there being no grease in the lower unit or bad gears?
February 1, 2017 at 10:25 am #52242Lift up on the drive shaft as you turn it, or hold the gear case upside down and turn it. This separates the gears to the proper running clearance. If it still "makes noise," or feels rough or gritty, then yeah, with those gear cases, you could very likely have a problem.

February 2, 2017 at 1:06 am #52269There is no grease. It still makes noise. I’ll check again when I put grease in.
How do I take the gears out. I’ve taken the propeller off and the brass plug.February 2, 2017 at 10:30 am #52280The rear of the gear case is threaded in. You need a spanner that fits into the two holes, to turn it. These can be bought or you can make something to fit. (Hopefully someone will post a picture of their clever tool made from an old adjustable wrench.) The piece is LEFT HAND THREAD. In other words you turn it CLOCKWISE to LOOSEN it. This is done so the normal rotation of the prop would not tend to loosen the cover.
Be advised though, that based on your questions, you are about to get in deep. However, we are here to help…..

They’re both the same price.Unless you feel comfortable with rebuilding the lower unit, I would most likely suggest you get the used unit that is complete. Once you get your feet wet into the hobby, you will be more able to tackle challenging projects. The Mark 5 is an excellent motor, but they are more complicated than the KF-5 that they replaced. As Dave Bernard has posted his contact information for you, and generously offered his help, I would get the complete one, replace the water pump, and move on to the rest or the motor.
