Wow, I too, just recently purchased a Mark 5. From my serial number I found out that mine is a "55", but, it’s missing the rubber grip, and the gas tank fuel cap (vent) knob is broken. I learned from watching Youtube, that the top handle has a neat feature that I did not know about..Pushing the little button makes the center of the handle "pop up", putting the outboard in neutral. Pushing the handle back down puts it in gear. So, it looks like the little Mark 5’s are keepers, just for the little neat features that they have. Don’t forget, it takes 1/2 pint of oil per gal. of gas… Around my neck-of-the-woods, (Wisconsin) I found some gas stations that do not have alcohol in the PREMIUM grade, so, that is what I use, in all of my outboards. You have a nice motor there….Good luck with it.

How do I remove the float?

There is a screw in plug or sediment bowl at the bottom of the float bowl. Remove it and you can push the float pin down to the level of the float. This will give you room, when turned up side down, to grasp the float and pull it out. . . 😉

If you are going to do major work on the older Mercury motors, this is the book you need. It is not perfect, and there are omissions and things, but it is the best we have.

I don’t know how much you want to spend, but this is not too bad for this book!

                Steve,

I agree on the choice of manual needed.

That is not a bad price for that book. It is going to get dirty anyway.
