I have a model 40 that I need to replace the impeller , the drive shaft is rusty so I cleaned as best I could .
but the impeller is in the cup I cannot find a way to grab it or pry it out
anyone have an idea ?
December 22, 2023 at 8:35 pm #283419try some lubricant WD 40 release-all etc… small impeller should not be hard to extract … freeze it or heat it up… something will give.

December 23, 2023 at 11:14 am #283434I have had to drill them out or chisel them out. The area of the core where the key fits is the thinnest (and weakest) point. It’s not too bad once you start working on that area. The core will break and widen slightly.
December 23, 2023 at 2:24 pm #283437I have used snowblower telfon spray with great success … it is water thing slippery anda sidetap with punch should loosen thing enough. if not cutting it will surely work

December 27, 2023 at 5:37 pm #283518Thanks I finally got it out using a dreamel with a grinder end .
I have a new question has anyone built a starter to use with a drill , or any kind of rope pull to fit the motor without the cowl ?December 27, 2023 at 8:21 pm #283521a simple drill with a sochet adapter for the size of th nut should turn it over . don.’t use an impact 1/4 inch drive so as to not screw down the bolt on the fw.

December 28, 2023 at 11:31 am #283525You have to wonder what the Mercury engineers were thinking when they designed that cowling with the recoil starter built-in. Remove the cowling and you have no starter. Sheesh.
With a small engine like your 4HP….a simple adapter like is mentioned by Crosbyman will work fine. Or you can find a suitable rope pull from some old engine and adapt it. The picture I have shows one from an old Scott Atwater 3.6HP but there are many others that will work .
Or….you can buy a custom starter with a built-in over-running clutch. There are adapters available for your electyric drill that would provide the added safety of the clutch. A bigger concern with larger engines though. Not so much for your 4HP.
December 28, 2023 at 4:54 pm #283532Thanks for the answers , that overrun clutch looks good to me .
my next question is , I have to replace the wires that run from the stator to the coil they are Nola , the insulation looks pretty thick does anyone know the gauge and insulation type that is ?
December 29, 2023 at 9:05 am #283543wire strands likely OK just brittle insulalion
why not cut at a good spot.. off set the cuts by 1-2 inches …
backslide some heat shrink tubing both ways with a final piece of tubing backslided over the 2 wires and then positionned across the joints
or apply lots of liquid tape
don’t forget to clean out the lower GC cavity of sandy crud and open up the drain hole !

December 29, 2023 at 10:10 am #283547Thanks for the suggestions, but the wire is so far gone I’m not sure the shrink is enough for the voltage , auto spark voltage is in 20 kv and up.
idk what outboards are
