Thanks Steve, good to know!
Prepare to be boarded!
November 18, 2015 at 11:02 am #27291While it is sure worth a try, swapping shafts around on old Mercurys can be very frustrating. You will likely find many very subtle differences….number of splines, a 1/4" difference in length, key type for the impeller, etc. I think it is possible in some cases, but not as a rule.
Long live American manufacturing!
November 18, 2015 at 1:31 pm #27300The easiest way to verify if a newer part will fit is to cruise through the parts lists and see if a new number has superseded the old one. In the case of the 20hp motors that I posted about, the new part number.

has good shafts…… don’t think I want to spend $200
buck on a new one for a 42 year old outboard!Prepare to be boarded!
November 18, 2015 at 1:58 pm #27305I understand about not wanting to buy a new one, my post was just to demonstrate that part number are often superseded and in some cases the new one will fit in older motors as direct fit, or may require a different water pump as is the case with the 69 and earlier 20hp’s. So often it is hard to tell what year your part is unless you can find casting numbers on the housing and peruse the parts list to see where it fell in the production runs.
Marinengine.com has good lists to search through, as well as Crowley and others.
Steve
