      Thanks for all your help on this site. I am so glad I joined AOMCI and this site and forum members are a great resource. I acquired this little Mercury for free and after cleaning it off and removing the mice nests inside, I was able to get it started after about 50 pulls. I took my time and was patient with it. It had the healthy thump thump and kept almost wanting to go until it did. Anyway, it idles decent and slides up to full throttle OK but not great. I would like to give this one the once over mechanically and cosmetically but have no idea where to start in terms of a good resource(s). I’ve only worked on OMC. Perhaps purchase a service manual? Thanks in advance for any thoughts on where to go first for a beginner on Mercury’s.

        Not my favorite Mercury, but, from what I am told ,nice motors when they run. That said, I would make two suggestions 1) Illustrated Parts Manual would be very informative 2) Do not run motor until impeller has been checked. Service manual are helpful IF you keep in mind that they were intended for experienced mechanics,working on relatively new motors using factory tools. Parts manual shows you what is inside, gives you an idea of their relationship and give names and part numbers.
        Mercury was not satisfied with KF5 so they made changes and changed name to Mark 5 and eventually Mark 6. Some parts are
        same and same and some are not.
        Western NY chaoter may have downloadable Parts Manuals. If not
        they may be available for modes sum elsewhere in download form.
        Impeller may or may not be as easy to come by. I have not looked into
        subject lately.
        One thing for sure,they are handsome little Green Mercx.

          I found this in my notes…… no idea if it’s correct, so do some research.

          =================================================

          Alternate impeller for ” 47-22062 ” Mercury KF5 “Super 5”
          J/E 386084 or Sierra 18-3050 will work if you reduce the height (thickness).

                  When I was kid, I raced a Mercury 60J in APBA, which had a similar powerhead, but with a miniature direct drive quicksilver gear case, and I think the fastest we ever saw was 34mph

                      Thanks all for the input and sweet motor jp53-n. I’ve got a 57 Fleetwin 7.5 hp to finish up on first but this one’s next.Very excited.

                        Yellowstone. The KF-5 is a good little motor. As for your Fleetwins, your Super 5 will most certainly outrun the Fleetwin. I have a 58, love it! So fun to run, but she is no speedster. The KF-5 actually has a more expensive impeller, but the lower units seem to keep water out better. The advantage of the Mk-5 of course is that they have a neutral. I have 2 of each, KF-5’s and MK-5’s. Run them as twins, and it is a real ride!
