In my opinion, the KF5 is a more solid, reliable motor than the Mark five and is much easier to work on. What it gives up in lacking a neutral, it gains in simplicity. Both models have a very sensitive-to-damage gear case. If yours is good (not broken just forward of the prop) treat it like gold and make sure you check/change the grease before and after each use! Welcome to The Dark Side. You have a good motor to start your journey with. They are fast and the run quality is darn near OMC-like. It will, literally, run CIRCLES around a 5 hp JohnsonTD 20.

Thanks 20mercman, billw and chuckw. I am excited to get it going. I coincidentally got a 53 Johnson 5 hp too with this motor, which I believe is a TD20. I’ve got 8 motors now. 3 running great and 5, soon 4, to work on! I never thought I was going to have to buy tags for them to indicate what I’ve done/where they are at/etc. but that may be coming soon!

Just eight motors right now? You’d better put an addition on the house now, because you’re gonna need the room…..

Ha. My wife has actually been asking for a small garage/workshop and I had a builder out the other day to take a look. We have a 2 car garage and she gets irritated at how tight it is in there with two vehicles and all motors and tools.
