Picked up a nice restored mk 25.
The pull start rope is hanging out with no tension. When I pull the rope i can feel a little bit of spring? How do I take the recoil start apart? Do I need any special tools?

If you are serious about repairs to Merc’s you need this tool.

Remove the front cover then the side. You will see bolts for the rewind.

remove the center cap on the top to access the nut to remove the guts of the rewind after removing the rewind assy like Jeff says.

Keep in mind that nut will be left hand thread. Sometimes you can work some oil into the various moving parts and it will work without taking it all apart…SOMETIMES.

                Long live American manufacturing!

If the recoil spring is broken you need to replace it or repair it. I have been able to rebend the spring by heating it and then bending to fit the posts on the recoil. If you try to clean the spring, be careful it does not pop out of the top. Good luck
