I let it come out, It was filthy. Clean the spring, then install it. Watch out it will get ya! Get a book. Just like fixing a fish tape.

Too late now, you already have it apart. But often that old grease problem can be solved by simply dumping a bunch of mineral spirits in the housing and pull the rope a few times, then drain. The remaining mineral spirits/dissolved grease residue will provide continuing lubrication.
