So, I got this for a Fathers Day gift, and other than knowing the name (growing up on the Puget Sound in the Seattle area), I know next to nothing about this engine. What makes things worse, I can’t seem to find anything that represents the model number, or such. I can find a bunch of numbers (which I think are part numbers), but nothing that I can correlate back to a model. the motor appears to be in good shape and someone has already started a re-store, and I would like to finish it, but obviously can’t do that, if I don’t know where to start. I am attaching photos in hopes of someone being able to steer me in the correct direction.
Thanks in advance for any help you all can lend here.If these photos are not helpful, please let me know which ones you need.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
July 11, 2021 at 11:05 pm #242518Thanks. I saw that, but I can’t even seem to find the model number anywhere on the thing-Just part numbers (I assume, because they are all different).
Is there a “Typical” place that the model number would be on one of these things? Thanks

I suspect the tag has fallen off or been removed.
The tag on my Fleetwin was here

This could be your motor with the front cover missing.

July 12, 2021 at 11:37 am #242611Thank you Boat House. There are definitely similarities, as well as differences. Mine doesn’t look like there are the screws available to attach a cover to it?
Also, the only 400 series numbers I can find are attached. They are on the cylinder heads and the shaft sleeve. It seems that no matter what I want to restore, it just can’t be mainstream and parts easily accessible -Lol. I would really like to find a manual, or something to go off of the parts that I am missing.
Thanks for the help, and any help you can continue to give.
July 12, 2021 at 3:21 pm #242648I think you will find the model number and serial number combination stamped into the lowest edge of the crankcase below the starboard cylinder. Use a flashlight. The number is not cast onto the metal , it is stamped into the metal. My version of your motor is the same except it has a poppet valve carb which makes mine a 8 HP. Yours is 8 1/2 HP with the fancy carb. Mine is a 1933 model 417 with the same crankcase (electric start) as yours and same spring dampened steering handle mount etc. Your tank is a keeper with those nice original decals. Are any decals visible on the ends of the tank??
July 12, 2021 at 3:30 pm #242649Thank you, I will take a look tonight. I have noticed that all the part numbers (I have found) are stamped directly into the metal as well. I have all three decals on the take in about the same condition as the rear-Legiable if you squint. I am glad they are keepers because I bet it would be a bugger to fun some repos
July 14, 2021 at 11:35 am #242837So I found the model number and it is in fact a 492. My question is, does the 0051 indicate the exact year. The 492 spaned multiple years?
Thank you for the location help, and any other tidbits you can throw my way.July 14, 2021 at 3:17 pm #242846The 0051 is likely the serial number of your particular motor.
