Hi I am new to the forum and am looking for help identifying a motor. Unfortunately my father recently passed and in cleaning our the basement I came across an old outboard motor that I would like to identify and hopefully bring back to life in my fathers memory. Unfortunately I do not know anything about this motor. I recall my father mentioning that he obtained an old motor years ago but that is it. I appreciate the help and look forward to the journey.

June 28, 2021 at 3:20 pm #241495It’s an evinrude model LA
I’d have to consult my book for the year when I get home.
Not a common motor.June 28, 2021 at 5:49 pm #241508It’s an Evinrude model LA big twin. 4hp. The serial number is from later in 1925. Weighs 80 lbs.
Yours appears to be missing the magneto and flywheel unless you have it off to the side.
Definitely a motor not too often seen.- This reply was modified 3 years, 5 months ago by lyks2tinkr.

June 28, 2021 at 8:45 pm #241516AnonymousHi thank you very much for the information. Unfortunately I am missing the magneto and flywheel as you mentioned. I am sure they are not an easy item to locate. Any further thoughts as far as areas to start looking for parts, manuals etc would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again
MikeJune 28, 2021 at 8:53 pm #241517Phil is correct, Evinrude LA BigTwin 4.0 up.
I have 2 of these myself.
There were several versions L, LA and LAT
to name a few..
Parts can be difficult to find but not impossible.
If you can come by a magplate and flywheel
You could at least run it on a battery ignition
System. If the remainder of the motor check out
to be ok.

Thank you once again for the information. I will place and add and see what I can find. Do you recommend a source of information for this model of motor that I can start to review and be come more fluent in vintage ?
Thanks again
MikeJune 29, 2021 at 9:16 am #241533Brook, good luck with your project. Not sure if you’re aware of the information available to you as a member. At the top of the page is a drop down called For Members Only which has a category called Inner Sanctum. Scroll down and you’ll find Garry Spencer Drop Box. Check it out, there’s a ton of information in there such as a service manual that covers your motor.
