Today I finished rebuilding some coils for early ELTO’s. I used the same coils seen in a Caille ignition rebuild article that was published in a recent issue of the Antique Outboarder. The coils are reasonably priced and are military spec so they should last a while. The coils require a condenser of .25 uf, which I decided was close enough to the .22 uf condensers used in the OMC universal ignition. The bench test was positive with a nice spark.

UPDATE: I have run the rebuilt coil on my 1928 Speedster and it works flawlessly.

Same seller. I had them shipped to an American member of the Upper Canada Chapter in Buffalo.

What I find interesting is that they look a lot like scintilla coils??? Wonder if they’d work as a substitute?

Finding Scintilla coils is the problem, finding Zephyr coils is easy…

These coils are $14.75 USD each and are available new. I can’t see me ever using Zephyr coils for this conversion again.

The single and two cylinder coils may fit the Bendix Scintilla stator. Part number is 9786E128. Problem may be where the secondary lead is located. It is about 45 degrees off. I mistakenly bought the coils for the solid state ignition and found that they fit the Bendix Scintilla stator.

The Saturn link works, but it’s for 2014 date. When I tried to get to their checkout I couldn’t get anywhere? A little checking on eBay put me on this link:

Seems to be the same coil? 3/8" laminates, but that is not a problem for battery ignition, right? This is the Standard Ignition Co. outboardnut refers to from time to time I believe. I didn’t think they would sell to the public? I have contacted them before. Times are a changing, maybe?
