      I’m working on a 1925 Pennant. One of the plug wires broke off at the hole in the stator plate.  Any advice on repairing this?  Can I solder a new wire to the coil?

        Have you pulled the flywheel off yet? Some of the Caille motors had a short wire to a separate terminal so new wires didn’t have to be soldered directly to the coil.

          Pulled it earlier.  It had a lot of black cloth electrician’s tape wrapped around everything.  I now see that it has sorta friction clips to hold the wires. That seems kind of dicey to me, but that is how it was designed?

            Easy fix to solder new wires on. You must use a soldering iron with enough watts 60-80 Watts to have enough heat energy to do the job quickly, so you don’t overheat and damage the coil.  I use an old RC car soldering station that I used when I raced RC cars. Pre tinning the wires and soldering iron will help with a fast-soldering connection. If you don’t get the solder to flow in 1-2 seconds get the iron off joint, let the parts cool off and try again. I never use soldering flux because it’s built into the solder I use “Rosin Core.”

            New rubber grommets can be found at Lowes.

                Before solderring use a wet sponge to wipe off the soldering tip then re-tin (melt solder) on the tip for a faster heat transfer to the solderi. Can’t think of it now but there is an insulating liquid in a 4 onze bottel from m g chemicals on the web. Insulates up 3400 volts & looks like clear fingernail polish. Called corona dope, I remembered.

                It was designed for flyback transformers in T.V. applications Flybacks make very high voltage for the tv scanning beam & they always arced until corona dope was developed. I’ve coated magneto coils with corona dope but added very fine fiberglass cloth saturated with corona dope for stability. Tom is correct, soldering coils is touchy. need to get in & out with the hot tip very fast & still might ruin the coil, The secondary windings are as thin or thinner than a hair. If you don’t want to pay shipping for new wire for the spark plugs go to a neon shop & ask for G.T.O. wire. stands for gass tube only. It is rated at 15,000 volts & get Hi-Flex wire, it’s made to flex for moving noen signs, All my motors I used gto wire & no problems& costs much less!! .
