all I can find is a 54643 # on a frost plug ( no plate) any idea on year of manuf ?? looks like mid 60s but can’t find the exact cowl paint motif … just 2 stripes on the sides front to back under the EVINRUDE & plain 6 on the front of cowl top half
needs a good cleaning…… probably coils cond. points plug wires etc..and cosmetic work but 75$cdn for a 6hp ain’t bad
thanks

Compression was mid 30s 🙁 (on both) but a few shots of Wd40 boosted things up to 60 psi and hopefully a good run should bring them up higher after some decarb. Won’t be any worse than my 9.5hp 9622a at 65psi which runs fine. Scoped the walls and they are not scored or anything some wear . The cam seems worn down (313676) but at 70U$ I’ll try to touch it up and realign it to meet the cam follower on the START mark.
Pulled the FW …found it loose so somebody looked in before me but….found nice cracked coils mag plate was clean so this kicker was likely dormant for years . Nice keel , prop needs a touch up but still useable. GC to be pressure tested, Shift handle was broken and replaced like a lot of these kickers transported & resting on the shift handle 🙁
engine turns over fine and shifts ok
a good mag rebuild (I may try my ceramic condensers) , timing, impeller , plug wires & boots and carb clean should wake it up. Paint refresh on cowl and where needed and done ! This will keep me busy while the grass wakes up. 🙂
see pics 1960s Evinrude 6hp exact mdl unknown (btw tested condensers on Mr.Mohat’s box both passed the test perfect . Points look new 🙂
needs a good clean and new thermostat)
coils ….

March 20, 2025 at 4:56 pm #294770Magneto refurbed with 9Kohms coils ( not my preferred ones but they fire nicely 🙂 ) timed with the “tool”
after reading Leroy’s looks like this 6hp would be a 70s engine since it uses a fixed HS jet rather than the HS needle arrangement 🙂
next will be pulling the power head to drop the GC inspect/change impeller. By the looks of the rotating “side post” pushing the magneto I think this baby never had the GC dropped because the top bolts were factory pristine .

March 21, 2025 at 8:55 pm #294820That is a 69 Evinrude 6hp Fisherman..
March 21, 2025 at 10:46 pm #294823When bad coils are a good thing!!! look to be low hours and a nice example.
A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
March 22, 2025 at 7:56 am #294827OK thanks for info… I was looking at cowl paint designs across the years in marine-engine.com but did not find this simple 2 stripe
paint design
I guess Leroy was off by a few years.. 🙂 The carburetor shown below is the basic simple standard unit but from about 1971 on using the fixed main-jet style.
noticed the shift link so pH pulling is not needed to access the shift rod but I’ll pull it anyway to inspect everything & maybe clean out some junk in case it is anything like my 5.5 Johnson
. thankfully I have spare base gaskets for these 6hp

March 23, 2025 at 12:09 pm #294836interesting.. this kicker has very little to … just a little carbon build up below the PH 🙂
All indicating very low use yet cosmetically the outside shows wear in need of paint touch ups. Must have been bounced around the back of a pick-up or car trunk… on once a year fishing trips when the shift handle was broken.
still not bad for 75$ CDN about 50U$
found a missing “O” ring on the drive shaft below the drive shaft to PH seal plate.

March 23, 2025 at 12:31 pm #294838When dropping the gearcase, remember that the roll pin has to line up with a slot up inside the exhaust housing, unlike the 5.5’s .
Maybe your carb has been swapped out.
The caps I ordered online (at your recommendation) work in the barrel for 15 minutes at least, but have not been sea trialed.
Good score for $75.00. I resurrected a similar long shaft with cracked coils just recently. Had to burn the paint on all 8 bolts to get the gearcase and extension apart . $ 40.00 CDN . Runs great now.

March 23, 2025 at 9:11 pm #294848crosbyman you have me confused! You show a green motor a red motor and a blue motor. The base gaskets are not all the same. The wrong gasket will cause some grief!
