Observations:
I purchased a Sierra gear case rebuild kit.
On the Sierra kit the rubber seal is 1/4 inch thick
On an old seal the rubber seal is 3/8 inch thick
Questions:
1.What are the two holes on the prop shaft seal housing (303050) for ?
2.Gear case half are suppose to be matched
Is the prop shaft seal housing also matched?
3.On my RDE-17 prop shaft seal housing there seems to be a hole that was filled.
I have prop shaft seal housings from RDS-20,RDS-21 and RDS-22 and they do not have a hole that is filled.
Did someone at the factory goof when making the dowel pin hole and just filled it in?
4.Should I use a different prop shaft seal housing?June 22, 2019 at 1:36 pm #177769June 22, 2019 at 3:12 pm #177777The two holes are there to help you remove the old seal. Using a small punch, the old seal can be tapped out using these holes. I wouldn’t be too concerned about the thickness of the new seal. As long as it’s installed square and keeps the water out, it will be fine. Bottoming it out in the carrier might even help the seals lip to ride on a fresh part of the shaft. These gearcases have been apart before and the seal carrier wasn’t aligned correctly with the corresponding dowel in the case before everything was tightened down, thus leaving the imprint.

June 22, 2019 at 4:56 pm #177783In the first picture above, is that new seal installed in the correct orientation? That face of the seal carrier faces the gearcase, so shouldn’t the oil seal be installed the other way around?

The original seal carrier is different than the 303050 called for in the parts list, but was this seal oriented correctly?
